The 1.9 TDi 90bhp utilises a VNT15 Garrett Turbo charger and side mounted intercooler which provides modest performance from the early high pressure pump system. The 90bhp predates the PD injection system so doesn?t have the efficiency or power of the later models. With software update alone we can provide for some impressive performance giving in gear performance times almost identical to the PD130 engine! We develop all of our software on the rolling road to ensure accuracy in terms of both power delivery and also to ensure fuelling, boost pressures and exhaust gas temperatures are all within tolerance. Our aim is for maximum power whilst maintaining optimum reliability.

I chose Celtic tuning, because unlike many companies, they will travel to your door to carry out the upgrade at a very competitive price. They also claim they can increase power from 90-125bhp, whereas many other companies only offer 110-115bhp.

Graham arrived on the day as arranged. Little did he know that I have professional timing gear for recording 0-60mph performance. I recorded some performance stats earlier in the day to compare with the tuned figures.

The remap took just under an hour. Graham simply plugged his equipment into the ECU to copy the existing engine tuning parameters. He then fed this into a laptop and altered the various parameters that control fuel, turbo boost and timing. The remapped file is then fed back into the cars ECU. However a copy of the original file is retained if ever we want to revert back to the factory settings.

Although I have not been able to use a rolling road to verify the power claim, the post-tuning performance figures pretty much confirm that the extra power is there.

0-60mph acceleration has improved, dropping from 12.55 seconds to 9.64 seconds. 30-70mph through the gears was also over 2 seconds quicker, down from 11.6 seconds to 9.6 seconds. 0-80mph acceleration is 4.8 seconds faster - now 16.98 seconds as opposed to 21.82 seconds.

More importantly overtaking ability has markedly improved with the 50-70mph increment now taking 6.9 seconds instead of 10.5 seconds formerly. To put that into perspective, fifth gear acceleration on the tuned car is even faster than the 4th gear 50-70mph time in original tune (7.9 seconds).

Instead of dropping a gear to overtake, I simply bury my foot in the carpet.

Bearing in mind I am not a professional road tester, the figures are impressive, and yet they could probably be bettered in the right hands.

In conclusion, the remap has made the car smoother, more responsive and more enjoyable to drive. So far there have been no discernible problems after a weeks use. Fuel economy does not appear to have been adversely affected. In fact my wife is so impressed, she asked why we didn't have the upgrade carried out sooner. Enough said!
